Bakehouse Project - APS Down School Londrina

The Association of Parents and Friends of People with Down's Syndrome - APS Down, Londrina Brazil - is building the facilities for a future Bakery. This project was approved by Londrina City Hall and the equipment were purchased with funds from the Londrina Fund for Children and Adolescents, by taxpayers of the annual Income Tax. The bakery's goal is to teach young people with Down syndrome a profession and assist them in the insertion in the labor market.

The brickwork is being conducted with resources from the APS Down School, received primarily through fundraising events and donations from parents and from the community.

Better Life for Down´s students

Published at RDU Magazine, Issue 545, November 2012

Congratulations to Ian Garske and all Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Armidale Central, NSW, for helping the School to Down Syndrome Kids and Adults, in Londrina, Southern Brazil.

The kitchen at the school was adapted to the people with Down Syndrome and they are already having cooking classes, learning a profession and becoming independent in their homes.

Many photos and the history of how this project started are all available at updownprojectbrazil.blogspot.com.br/

The Rotary Club of Armidale Central did a great job and is making a difference in these kids life. Mr Garske was the first one who believed in this project. I was an exchange student in Armidale in 1993 and Mr Garske was one of my host fathers almost two decades ago.

One year ago...

On October 15, 2011, exactly one year ago, occurred a heavy rain which caused havoc at APS Down School. Many good things had happened since then. This is tribute to all the friends who had helped in cleaning, reconstructing and reorganizing the school.

The heavy rain that occurred in the region of Londrina in the afternoon of October 15, 2011 caused flooding and havoc in the city, where 95 mm of rain felt over a period of 6 hours.

APS Down was flooded with lots of water and about 50 cm of mud.
The institution´s back wall could not stand the force of water and collapsed on the water main supplying water to the building. Rainwater and the water from the broken water mains took all the mud into the school.

These were the rooms for physiotherapy, speech therapy, art class and occupational therapy.

The computer room for the students with brand new computers, recent donation from HSBC Solidarity Institute - Roberto Ariozo´s project and initiative, he is a volunteer and student´s father.

Canteen and Secretariat

Staff, parents and many volunteers worked hard to clean the school.

One week later ...

Three weeks later...

The school was clean but still recovering from damage caused by rain and mud.
Materials, toys, books, food .. much has been lost.
The electrical wiring, wood floors, furniture, computers and freezers were damaged.
Pupils were about 3 weeks without classes.
The students and the staff were welcomed by the Institute of Blind People (ILITIC) and the classes and therapies continued in an adapted space for more than a month.
Without the backwall, the school remained open and subject to looting for weeks.
It was necessary to hire security personnel. But with much help, slowly the school is still getting organized.
